The word promise doesn't mean what it used to mean.
In days gone by, a promise was something sacred and special, something trustworthy that could be depended on.
Nowadays, a promise is just as good as the one who gives it.
And usually, we can be let down by a promise, no matter how good it sounds or who gives it.
But what if you knew- knew for sure- that there was someone who had a promise especially for you, and that promise was so trustworthy, so sacred and special, so true, that you could stake your life on it?
Well.... there is Someone like that who has a promise like that.
definition of promise
1:a declaration that one will do or refrain from doing something specified:a legally binding declaration that gives the person to whom it is made a right to expect or to claim the performance or forbearance of a specified act
The dictionary's first definition of promise above says that a promise is a declaration that one will do or not do something, or a legal declaration that gives one the right to expect a certain thing.
God says the same thing to us in the Bible. He has given us a promise so trustworthy and true that we can stake our lives on it. He has said that He will give a new life filled with hope and purpose to anyone who will receive it. 1 John 2:25 says "And this is the promise that He made to use- eternal life".
All we have to do is trust Him.
Ephesians 2:8-9 says "...for by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works so that no one may boast."
There's nothing we can do to earn this promise. It is a gift from God to those whom He has chosen.
Romans 10:9-10 tells us how we can receive this promise as our own... "...if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved."
It's that simple. If you believe what Jesus has said, if you have accepted this promise as your own and are seeking to live a life that glorifies Him.... you have possession of the ultimate promise of all! He loves His children with an everlasting love (Romans 8:38-39) and He will never let you go.
And that's a promise.
