you're not a label
a name or in a category
just another type to be
stuffed into a mold
and come out looking
just like the others
with that label
or name or category
we're all unique
and different
with our own twists
to what we are
and what we do
nobody can be just like you
and you can't be
just like anyone else
so just be the one
that He made you to be-
yourself
it's hard sometimes
to find out how
to be yourself in a world
where we're supposed to be
selfish and all about us
but we can actually be
who we were made to be
while still knowing
that everything is
not about us
it's about Him
and when you be yourself
who He made you to be
you let His light
shine through you
in the way that He
made you to be
so shine bright for Him
while being who
He made you to be-
yourself
It's okay to be yourself. That's who God made you to be, and you can't be anyone else.
So often, we compare ourselves to others and we feel like we need to be more like so-and-so, or more like this or that. No. The only one that we need to be more like is Jesus. Our goal as Christians should be to grow more like Him every day. Of course, we all have other role models, and people we look up to and admire. And that's okay. But we don't need to try to be them. We need to be who He made us to be, with the personality, traits, and even quirks that He gave us. If everyone was like everyone else, it would get pretty boring pretty fast! God knew what He was doing when He made everyone unique, and He wants us to use the unique talents He gave us to glorify Him. Even if it means doing things the way we are meant to, the way He wants us to, the way that no one else is doing things.
So let's learn how to be ourselves, while at the same time becoming more like Him, letting His light shine through us.
Be the you He made you to be. You can't be anyone else. ♥

Wow Emily, I love it! That poem is so amazing and encouraging. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jane! (Love your name, by the way!) I'm so glad you enjoyed it. :)
DeleteBeautiful poem, Emily!!! You wrote that?? Wow. Whenever I try to write a poem it turns into a song. *sigh* ;D And the message of that poem is amazing. It's so true that we can't be someone else even if we try our hardest. You had some great thoughts on that!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Hannah! Yes.. I did write it. *blushes* I'm sure your poems are amazing as well! I'd love to read one sometime. But songs are wonderful too! Whatever you write from your heart is beautiful. Thank you for your sweet comments! <3
DeleteThat was so awesome! I think you really hit on a point not many of us think about, that not only can nobody be like us, we can't be like anyone else. I think many of us, (Myself included) think that trying to make ourselves like someone we know will fix the problems we have, when we really need to be becoming the person God made us to be.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
-Mikayla-
Aw, thank you, Mikayla! We can only be who God made us to be, and we often forget that. S it's nice to be reminded every now and then. ;)
DeleteThank YOU for your kind words and comment! ♥
Just letting you know that I have some blog updates.
ReplyDeleteAHG Girl

ReplyDeleteThank you- I'm so glad you enjoyed it! <3
DeleteWOW. EMILY. I LOVE THIS SO MUCH.
ReplyDeleteThis is everything...like the subject of living original and living for God is so near to my heart...I LOVE THIS. It made me think of a quote that went like "be who God made you to be, not who others want to see." BUT WOW. God made us all for a purpose. WOOOOW.
---> "that everything is
not about us
it's about Him"
THAT LINE IS PERFECT. I love this post so much, Emily :)

EEP THANK YOU SO MUCH, AUTUMN!!
DeleteI'm so glad you enjoyed it- it's something that I've been thinking a lot about as well. I love that quote- it was basically what I was trying to sum up in this post. I'm so thankful for the One who inspires!
Thank you so much for your kind words, Autumn! They truly made me smile. <3
Your poetry is beautiful, Emily! And your message is so so true.
ReplyDeleteThank you Grace! I do enjoy writing poetry, although I'm still pretty much learning how to. xD I appreciate all your lovely comments! <3
DeleteO.O
ReplyDeleteGirl.
You should write (and post!) poetry more often, cause DUDE YOU GOT SKEEEELS. I can't decide if I write a lot of poetry, or if I just write a lot of really dramatic journal entries. XP
Thank you so much for sharing, and for being yourself!!! <3
GAH thank you, Hannah!! I actually write poems all the time, but I never feel like sharing more than a select few. ;) And hey, dramatic journal entries are pretty close, right? :D
DeleteThank you so much for your encouraging words! They made my day. ♥♥
This was refreshing to read, honestly. I really like how you brought out that 'being yourself' is all about knowing Him and resting in His plans for us.
ReplyDeleteSo, thank-you, and keep writing! xx
Thank you so much, Jessica! I think that's the thing that gets lost sometimes, remembering that to be ourselves, we have to be in Him.
DeleteI appreciate your comments so much! ♥
That poetry! I wish I could write more abstract poetry like that. Omgoodness, it was beautiful. Printing it out and hanging it on my wall. Totally.
ReplyDeleteAw, you're so sweet! I'm sure you could write poetry like that if you tried. ;)
DeleteEEP, REALLY?! That totally makes my day, Abi! <333
This was beautiful, Emily! <3

DeleteYour welcome!! ♥
ReplyDeleteYour welcome! Thank you for all YOUR kind words too. =)
Jaidyn Elise
Emily, your poem is so beautiful and powerful! Praise God, the giver of talents and gifts.
ReplyDeleteI really, *really* like that you touched on being ourselves AND on becoming like Jesus in one post. I feel like too often we emphasize one and forget the other. But it's liberating to realize that they work together.
And I must say, I'm very guilty of trying to be who I think others want me to be - so much so that sometimes I feel I'm not so sure what my own personality and quirks are... your thoughts?
Thank you so much! Yes, indeed!
DeleteI always feel like that as well, because normally it's on one extreme or the other. It's so nice to realize that we need both!
Hmmm... I understand, because I've felt that way before- and still do! I think we need to realize what kind of talents and personality we have, so we can understand how to further use them for God. Sometimes we do things simply because others want us to, but we really don't enjoy doing. If we know what we really DO enjoy doing, we can use those talents for Christ!
That probably didn't make much sense, as I'm still figuring it out too. :P But I'm so thankful that we can all learn together! xx
No, that does make sense to me. :) As I read your reply a second time, I stopped at the word "realize". When I'm trying to understand something on a deeper level, I like to camp out on key words. X) Anyways, according to Google, "to realize" means to become fully aware of something as a fact or to understand it clearly.
DeleteSo applying that to this topic, you could say that we need to become fully aware of what kind of talents and personality we have and understand them clearly so that we can then understand how to further use them for God.
Anyway, I just thought that was interesting since I like looking at words. X) I agree that it's a valuable blessing for us all to be able to learn together. I too am thankful.
Good! I'm glad it made sense. I get to rambling sometimes, and then I don't even understand what I was trying to say. :P
DeleteI love that you dove deeper into that word! It's fun to do that. :) I agree with your summary- realizing is becoming more fully aware.
Hey Emily! I just wanted to let you know that this post encouraged me so much. I decided that since it encouraged me, it would definitely encourage others, so I shared it on Featured Friday for this week. Hope all is well!
ReplyDeleteYou are so inspiring! Have a fabulous weekend! :)
